Relief

My exams are done. Phew!

It's weird, now that I don't have to worry about studying or any other school-related obligations, what will I do with my free time? Here are a few options:

1. Sleep
2. Read, for fun.
3. Catch up on TV shows
4. Sleep
5. Spend quality time with my family
6. Reunite with my friends from high school
7. Sleep
8. Write
9. Not worry about putting forth effort to look presentable
10. Sleep

Notice how many times I've mentioned sleep?

It doesn't sound like an exciting break, but a break is exactly what I need. I miss Leelanau County and Leelanau County misses me. Don't get me wrong, I love staying busy with school and being involved in extra-curriculars, and I love Grand Rapids with all my heart. But every now and then, I need to take time to just be myself. No obligations, no meetings, no classes, no worries. Everyone is entitled to a day of rest, even the Bible says so.

"Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”  ~ Matthew 11: 28-29

The blog is back!

Man, it's been a long time since I've been on here.

When I started this blog about a year ago , it was because I was going to travel abroad to Malawi, Africa (which I just realized that today is the one-year anniversary of when I received my acceptance letter!). I had so many different emotions and I needed to keep track of them! It definitely helped that my best friend was going on the trip with me, as well as my brother's news about moving to California that helped my parents not be as worried. I wanted to write down everything that happened to me before, during, and after my trip.
After I left Africa and told my story, it felt like this blog didn't have a purpose. I felt lost, confused, and had no idea why I was still writing.

This time, I'm not so sure why I'm re-starting. Part of me missed blogging and expressing myself in ways I wasn't use to (such as writing down my feelings and such). Another part of me is interested in developing my skills as a writer, especially since I will be working in Marketing or Advertising where there will be writing.

Now, back to the one-year anniversary thing.

Originally when I applied to Africa, I had no idea what made me want to go. Maybe it was my desire to study abroad (and be able to graduate on time). Maybe it was my need for adventure. Or maybe it was a sign that showed me how big the world really is. I mean, I went through 3 different continents to get there! I've stepped foot on nearly half of the world at this point. And my desire to see the world hasn't changed, in fact, it's gotten even bigger!

While I don't promise my posts will relate to Africa, or anything earth-shattering, I will promise to write on my blog for the sake of writing. Whatever is going on in my life, I will find a reason to write about it. This will not only help me develop as a writer, but also find a creative way to make my life sound more interesting and exciting.

Art Prize 2012

Last Friday, I finally got to see Art Prize, and participate in Light the Night Grand Rapids.

I'm back!

I haven't posted on here for a few weeks, and a break was much needed. I realized I wasn't producing as good of posts (in my opinion) by writing several in one week. Instead, I'll try to post at least twice a week to keep things fresh.
Let's see, what has happened in the past 2/3 weeks....actually a lot of things!
1. Got another stage manager job for next semester for the musical Chicago!
2. One of my dogs was put to sleep. Rest in Peace Maggie, you will be deeply missed ♥ 10/2/12
 3. I will be traveling to Bethlehem Farm, West Virginia for Fall Break!
4. I no longer have to wear my splint for my hand. However I have to keep it just in case, as well as wrap it whenever I have to do any physical activity like volleyball or soccer (only soccer based off of how much I fall).
5. Art Prize 2012! I got to see some great pieces of art, as well as participate in Light the Night Grand Rapids (photos coming later!)

Favorites of Fall

Technically fall doesn't start until Saturday, but with the recent weather change, it feels like fall to me. It's my favorite season of the year! Of course every season has their perks, fall is my favorite. Here's why:

Are you cute or ugly?

I'm already two weeks into my junior year of college. I feel so old, especially looking at the freshman. I never realized how much of a difference two years could make!

A Part-Time Common Read

Happy Labor Day! I can't believe it's already September. Here's hoping it actually decides to cool off soon. I hate all this hot, sticky weather!

Hooray!

It's already the last day of Orientation!?!?!?!? Wow, time sure does fly. I'm going to miss seeing these guys everyday. But hey, it is Aquinas, so I'll run into them eventually.

Love where you live

8/24/12

It's the 2nd day of Orientation, and it's starting to kick in that I'm sleep deprived. Oh well, I have all of Sunday to catch up on sleep anyway.

Friday, August 24, 2012

Can I help you with that?

Happy Move-In Day! The day we've been waiting for has finally arrived!

The best Brian?

8/21/12

Well, guess who slept past their alarm?

Heather has you covered

8/20/12

Day 2 of training. I'm use to getting up early, and I don't mind it now. But I never realized how much of a difference it is waking up for work at 8:00 am compared to waking up for class at 8:00 am. Let me just say right now that our Director of Campus Life, Heather Hall, is phenomenal. No matter what, she has you covered.

8/19/12

@jnnfrklchk: Orientation Training begins tonight! Can't wait to meet the new freshman

I was an Orientation Leader this week for the incoming freshman and transfer students. Here are some of the highlights of #newAQ12 (our official hashtag for Twitter, I think we took it a bit too serious). Remember: Orientation is not sponsored by Budweiser.

At summer's end: to new beginnings

It has been exactly 3 months since I've returned from Africa, and now that Orientation training has officially started, it's safe to say my summer is officially over. A lot can happen in 3 months, which became very evident this summer.

Where r u trust?

There have been a lot of ads recently about the dangers of texting while driving. Well, first off, this is not only stupid/dangerous, but people really shouldn't be doing this in the first place.

Tionana

It's great being back in Grand Rapids! Although I'm still not completely settled into my new house, it's amazing how much progress I've made so far. Oh the things you can do when you don't have the Internet to distract you....

Today is my last day at work! Who would've thought the idea of being unemployed would sound so good right now?

Olympic Fever

This will be my first official year following the Olympics 24/7. I've caught clips of events usually each year, but I want to fully immerse myself this year. I got to visit London before the Olympics started, but I wish I could be there right now!

Go Big Or Go Home

My desire to go abroad again hasn’t changed. In fact, I want to go again even more! I'm also open to the idea of moving to another state next summer. I know this will be my last summer home, but I don’t know what I want to do………

Happy 100th post! I can't believe how much my blog and I have been through since I first started in December.

The Malawi (and London) Swag Bag

I've been dying to post the souvenirs I got from Malawi and London for the longest time! The main reason I haven't is because I wanted these to be a surprise for those who were lucky enough to get these as gifts. Well wait no longer!

Thursday, July 19, 2012

Mr. Know It All

I got to spend the day with my second family, aka the Lanczaks, yesterday. I was afraid I wouldn't be able to see them this summer due to our busy schedules, but lucky I did! We went to a minor league baseball game for the Traverse City Beach Bums. Their two mascots are Suntan and Sunburn, two bears who play silly pranks and help interact with younger fans.

Solitude

I don't mind the company of others, in fact, if I may say so, I have some great friends and family. However, moments when I can be by myself and do what I want sometimes seem more appealing.

Tour de M22

One of my friends from Grand Rapids got to visit me on Saturday. Basically we traveled through all of Leelanau County in one night. I like to call it the "Tour de M22". We visited Leland, Fishtown, Sleeping Bear Dunes, and Suttons Bay.

Thanks for making me a fighter

It's been nearly two weeks since my last post, and I'm sorry for that. One thing I hate about being up north is the lack of Internet. But, there's also another reason as to why I haven't been updating as much:

Time is Love

Since it is officially summer, that means my love for country music is evident! No matter what, Kenny Chesney's "Summertime" is on my playlist each summer. I have a pair of cheap shades on hand, a spirit of adventure, and, as of the end of this summer, possibly a tattoo.......

Top of the World

Lately due to the warm weather (okay, maybe warm is an understatement, try muggy, hot, and miserable!) my hometown has had a ton of thunderstorms. I've been getting into photography a lot this summer, and I decided to capture the storm before it hit. I was inspired after seeing this photo on M22's Facebook page:

I’m not homesick; I’m sick of home. This was my unofficial catchphrase last summer.

I got a bill on Saturday. No surprise since I'm in college. However, this bill was quite the opposite of what I expected....

It's Now or Never....

I keep seeing YOLO everywhere I look. It was catchy the first time, but I mean seriously? It's getting really old now. I see it in every other #hashtag, photo album title, and tattoo (now that's pushing it too far!).

Our flight is cancelled?

I'm officially back in the United States! It feels so good being at home. I love Malawi with all my heart and plan on visiting again. There is so much to tell, and I'm not sure words can even describe it! I will try my best, but for what it's worth, traveling abroad was one of the best decisions of my life.

Here's Day 1:

Greetings from Kenya!

Hello everyone! Sorry it's been a while since I updated. Everything is great so far, I love Africa! I will be home tomorrow afternoon. Also, I will updating my blog a little differently when I get back. My next posts will be like journal entries for each day I was gone. Can't wait to share my adventure! :)

It's Time for Africa!

In less than 12 hours, I will be going on a plane and hopping across the pond for the first time! I'm nervous, but excited. I don't know if I'll be able to update my Facebook/Twitter/blog while I'm in Africa, but honestly, if I don't, it'll be a nice break. I'm truly blessed to be one of the first students from AQ to go on this trip, and I can't wait to see what is out there.
Peace. Love. AQMalawi ♥

Sweet Summertime

I'm no longer a sophomore! Junior year here I come. Have a great summer everyone.:)

The rest is still unwritten

It's so close to summer! Only one final left :)
What does my summer entail? Well, summer classes, working at Roman Wheel, and of course, Africa! However, the rest is still unwritten. I've been playing my Itunes on constant repeat until my finals are done. My recent addiction, Unwritten by Natasha Beddingfield.
There are some particular lyrics that have been stuck in my head.
"Can't read my mind, i'm undefined"
"Today is when your book begins, the rest is still unwritten"
"We've been conditioned to not make mistakes, but I can't live that way"
This really describes my life right now. I feel like I always have to be perfect, but no one is perfect. And God wouldn't want it any other way. Everyone is planning their lives, whether it's grad school, marriage, or who knows what. I have ideas, but I know better that life doesn't always turn out the way it should.
I feel like after going to Africa, it will be the major turning point in my life.Yeah, high school graduation was kind of a mildstone too, but honestly I didn't care, I was happy to get the heck out of there!
I can't believe I only have three days until I go to Africa. Many have been asking if I'll update my Facebook or my blog while I'm there. Unfortunately my Internet connection will be quite spotty, but when I get back, I plan to blog about each day as if it just happened. I can't wait to share my adventures in Africa and actually experience them for myself! Who knows what will happen, I mean the ending is unplanned :)

Don't worry 'bout a thing

It's only Tuesday and I already want to chuck my books into the nearest fireplace. Why can't it be summer? It doesn't help I've been listening to country music while studying, which makes me want summer even more!
One song in particular is "Don't Worry 'Bout a Thing" by SheDaisy. It's an older song, but I use to love this band when I was growing up.

The lyrics really spoke to me, because my life recently has felt like a big rollercoaster, with many ups and downs. My favorite part is the chorus:

"Life is funny, life's a mess
Sometimes a curse, sometimes a blessing
Don't worry 'bout a thing, don't worry 'bout it
Life gets sticky, life can bruise
Sometimes you win sometimes your losing
No matter what it brings
Don't worry 'bout a thing"

This just makes me want summer even more! Just drive around in my car, windows down, not a care in the world. I know life can be tough, but sometimes you just need a break from it all, and for me that's what summer means.

Keep calm and carry on (literally)

I'm sick of studying, so I'm focusing on my trip for next week. Now the fun part of traveling: packing. Not only will I be leaving for two weeks as opposed to usual study-abroad trips, but we have to deal with customs and all that fun stuff since we're leaving the country. I found this great website for packing:
 http://selectstudyabroad.com/2012/01/top-ten-tips-for-packing-luggage/
This has some really good tips, such as rolling your clothes to pack instead of folding them. I love the tips about how to protect liquids and keeping everything fresh. I'm just praying everything will be able to fit! Here's what I've been able to pack so far:
I know for sure one thing I absolutely need to pack: sunscreen. even though i was only outside for a few hours yesterday during our Soccer tournament, my face got fried (definitely not as bad as my friend Katie). I'm also a little worried about the mosquitos, I'm usually a food magnet for them during the summer. But I've been taking my malaria pills and I'm packing plenty of bug spray.

The Cab Day

Happy Sunday! Trust me, this was a much needed day of rest. After staying up until about 6:30 am this morning, my parents coming down to move nearly half of my belongings home, and IM Soccer tournament, I'm exhausted. On the plus side, our team won the championship! It was a good start to what will be a very long week due to exams and my excitement for leaving for Africa. In addition to the fact that it's one week until I leave for Africa, it's also The second annual The Cab Day. It's the four year anniversary of the release of their first album, Whisper War. Calling all fans of The Cab! The band has overcome so much this past year, such as getting dropped by their label and releasing their sophomore album, Symphony Soldier, independently. This is a day to celebrate.

I first heard of this band last summer. I went to an All Time Low concert and they were one of the bands traveling with them. I thought they were okay at first, but I truly fell in love with them last fall, when they appeared in Grand Rapids as a part of Art Prize. They are very loyal to their fans, even staying after their show to meet their fans. My friends and I were so giddy after meeting them. It was a little embarrassing, but can you blame me?
If you've never heard of this band, go check them out right now! Some of my favorite songs by them include (but not limited to):
Angel with a Shotgun
La La
Bounce
Vegas Skies
I'll Run
Intoxicated
Endlessly
Temporary Bliss
Can you Keep a Secret?

It's 4:00 am, more time to study

It's officially Finals Week, and I'm still awake on a Saturday night at 4:00 in the morning. This is the only week during the semester when our college's library is open 24/7. As part of a tradition, my friends and I study all night on the first night it's open. Usually this consists of random activities, such as chair racing, video posting, sing a longs, and dance parties.
Most people think we're nuts for doing this, but it's a great bonding experience. None of us are in the same class, but seeing others study gives me the motivation to study. As of now, I've finished a take-home exam, written two pages each for separate papers, prepared study guides, and worked on a packing list for Africa. Usually at this point I'm so tired, but with how much I've finished, I'm still going strong. I deserve a break, which for me means a blog post and watching a movie or something.
Well, I'm going back to working on homework, or procrastinate a little bit more, or maybe sleep.....

Thursday, April 26, 2012

This just got real

I decided to take a mini-break from blogging so I can sort out what exactly I need to do to be able to pass all my classes, which means studying, a ton.
But the days are dwindling down; tomorrow, I will be in the single digits until I leave for Africa! It's hard to believe. I just got my International Student ID yesterday, and my group is already packing.
I've been asked to provide an interview. Some of the questions are pretty basic, such as major, how are you involved on campus, how did you hear of the program, year, etc. But some questions I really need to think about: why did you want to study in Africa? What do you hope to bring back? What has Aquinas been like so far?
For the first question, I have two reasons:
The first: I've always wanted to study abroad, but with expenses and how close I am with my friends and family, I was positive I couldn't study abroad for a whole semester (especially with the fact that my majors wouldn't let me qualify). My cousin currently attends Westpoint and was able to study abroad last year in Egypt. Of course this was during the riots and he had to be relocated to Morocco.
The second reason: since both of my brothers have made their names known at Aquinas, I had to make my mark somehow. I'm part of the first group of students from Aquinas College traveling to Africa. My input is vital since I will be providing feedback for future trips. I want to make a difference (I know, I'm using Aquinas' slogan, but it totally applies!)
For the second question, I hope to bring back more of an understanding of developing countries. I'm not sure what to expect exactly, but I'm keeping an open mind (as well as a charged camera battery to document my trip!)
And the last question, well, I'll save that for another day. It's almost time for Africa!

Journey of Life

Serenity Prayer:
"God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannto change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference."

It's the start of Exam Cram. I'm not as worried about my exams as usual. I'm getting more worried about other useless things: flying on a plane, finding a job for next fall, and of course, my accounting class. I spend most of my time worrying about the future that I sometimes forget how far I've come in my life so far, especially from one year ago.
At this time last year, I was getting ready for my oldest brother Mike to graduate, trying to grow my hair out from a previous bad haircut, preparing for my first summer away from college, that kind of stuff. I had a general idea of what I wanted to do that year in the future, but let's be honest, I wasn't expecting much of myself. I got cocky, assuming everything would work out without putting much thought or effort into ii. I was very reluctant of my summer job (as my manager put it "bitter", ugh I hate that word) and having to live at home away from my friends in college. Of course I had hopes and dreams, but they were nothing compared to now.
Looking back on all that has happened so far this year, it's hard to believe how much I've truly changed in just one year. Everyone says the first year of college is when you start to grow up, but for me, I don't think that was the case at all. It was mostly this year, my sophomore year, when I realized what I have to offer the world and what I want to potentially do with my life. I've been more grateful for things in my life, and learned that not everything is going to go your way. People have always said that but I'm starting to realize just how true it actually is. Don't get me wrong I still don't fully know what I want to do with the rest of my life, but I do know what I don't want to do and that I need to be my own person, so that's a start.....
Of course I have had some difficult times this past school year: a horrid living situation the first part of the year, losing some good friends, not getting to be on court for Michigan Apple Queen, accounting (yes it's that bad), losing my dog Mac, having my brother move all the way across the country for a job, etc. But even through those hardships, my faith in both God and myself have guided me through those difficult times. I've met new people in my life who not only challenge me, but also teach me to be a better person. With God's help, I've grown (and will still grow) in courage, wisdom, and acceptance.

Hakuna Matata

It's the start of Exam Cram. I've realized I've had so much to do before, but it seems to all pile at once. You can definitely tell the end of the semester is upon Aquinas College. Part of the stress is not only all this last minute work for classes, but also the challenge of applying for scholarships and finding a job for next semester (no luck so far, keep me in your thoughts and prayers for finding employment!).
I know I'm stressed, but I need to remember one thing: Hakuna Matata. Stress tends to get the better of me every time it comes up. I have so much to look forward to after the semester is over, especially going to Africa. Which is more of a reason to think of "Hakuna Matata". I need to focus on school, but I can't go crazy over it and stress myself out even more. Although my stress levels at an all time high, I will continue to update my blog as usual, but if you don't see any recent postings or they're not as long or insightful as usual, don't be alarmed....I am still alive, just busy.

Remember: Hakuna Matata

Whose Troupe is it Anyway?

I went to the In Case of Emergency Improv Show last night after my rehearsal. It was their last show of the year and they had Alumni from previous years of the Troupe join the cast. It went like any other Improv show, game here, laughs everywhere, you name it.
My personal favorite was them performing an Irish Drinking Song. I love that game! It's from the TV show "Whose Line is it Anyway". Basically they have to make up a song one line at a time about a certain subject, like so:
Even with bringing back "Irish Drinking Song" that wasn't even the highlight of the night! Their final game was "The Proposal", which has a couple (in this case Chris Skurka and Katie Rogala) with the boyfriend trying to propose, but various obstacles and random strangers interrupt. About hallway through the game, one of the alumni, Sean Fahey, takes Chris' place as the boyfriend and completely goes off track from the story Katie and Chris created. She had no idea what was about to happen: he pulled out a ring and proposed to her right onstage!
All of the girls in the audience were, well, acting like girls, and going "awwww" (myself included). She said yes!
Now that was a great way to end the year for the Troupe! It was a joy going to their shows this year, and I can't wait to audition next year and see what the Troupe will have in store for next year!
The newly-engaged couple :)

We're the Parisian Marvels, and none of us are French

In honor of AQ's 125th anniversary, the AQ Theatre Program proudly presents a world premiere of this steampunk fantasy loosely inspired by a smattering of minor novels by Jules Verne (author of Around the World in 80 Days).

For those grumpy gills about there....

As mentioned earlier this week, I just got back from my bike retreat. Honestly, everything and anything that could go wrong pretty much did. Rain came, I found a hole in my water bottle, lost one of my keys on my keyboard, and a rosary I hung in a tree for good weather was stolen :(

Monday, April 16, 2012

What can you do in 20 seconds?

In my humanities class we just finished reading a narrative called "The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass". The narrative is about the life of a former slave, Frederick Douglass, in the 1800's and how he became a powerful leader of the abolishment of slavery.

I will be leaving for the weekend on a bike trip to a nearby town called Rockford. This will be the second year I've done Arete, which  is an annual bike retreat possible through Aquinas College. Arete means excellence of any kind or being the best you can be.

It's for the orphans....

Last night I volunteered at a benefit concert for Casa Hogar. I'm currently the Treasurer of a student club on campus that supports two of the orpahns and pays for their scholarships.

10 Canine Commandments

I received some terrible news today: my dog Mac who's had arthritis for a few years was put to sleep this morning. He couldn't even stand up. My family first got him in 2007 when one of my classmates couldn't keep their dog anymore. My family adopted Mac and he became a part of the family just like that.

Travel List Challenge

27 days left! It's flying by soooooo fast. And speaking of flying, I've been searching pretty much anything and everything related to traveling online these days. I've also been talking with people who have traveled abroad previously to get tips from them. One of them was my chiropractor who traveled to India: he told me to practice showering with my mouth closed. The reason why is because even though the water is clean enough to shower, it might not be safe enough to drink. You'd be surprised how often your mouth is open in the shower.

Jesus Christ is Risen Today

Happy Easter! As mentioned in my earlier posts, I can't believe how fast Lent has gone by. 40 days without coffee is 39 days too many in my opinion. Remember what this day is truly about: Jesus Christ who died for our sins has conquered death and saved us. Now, get off the computer and go enjoy this glorious day!

Muli bwanji?

Today I had another meeting for my trip to Malawi, Africa in May. We had two guests visit the class: Provost of Aquinas College Chad Gunnoe and Rev. Gerald Guduli. The Provost wanted to speak on behalf of the college how excited they are for us to be given such a unique opportunity and wanted to wish us safe travels.

How short is too short?

My senior prom (I'm in the short blue dress). Hopefully you don't think my dress is too short or tight

Africa is a continent if you're a geographer

Happy Palm Sunday! And Happy April Fool's Day. Can you believe it's already April? Lent has gone by so fast. Not that I'm complaining, I decided to give up coffee realizing that being more empathetic wasn't enough.

Sophomore Pinning Ceremony

My certificate for my Sophomore declaration of my major with my friend Katie (left), looks really legit!

It's better to give than receive

Some great highlights of my day so far: my Accounting class was cancelled this afternoon! That never happens, so as you can imagine I was quite happy finding this out. I got my Humanities Exam back and scored a solid 90%! I went shopping with my friend Rachel to buy longer clothes for Malawi and found numerous cute, usuable items such as dresses, skirts, etc. we plan to wear in Malawi and after our trip as well. I'm also the new Public Relations Manager for the Sports Management Club at my school, as well as going into my second year as Treasurer of Bravo!, my school's theater club.

39 Days

Only 39 days until I will be on Malawi soil (as well as England and Kenya soil). It's so close I'm getting so nervous and excited. So I started singing a song called Nervous But Excited (props for those who know where that quote is from). I have my prescription for malaria (prevention, trust me no one wants malaria) and I'm getting my typhoid and yellow fever shots on Thursday. I think the thing I'm most afraid of is well, my fears. I'm terrified of two things the most: snakes and heights.

The Gift of All: A Community of Givers

I've been in Grand Rapids for about two years, and I'm starting to remember all of the famous names that are usually associated with this area: Meijer, DeVos, Hauenstein, Wege, Cook, etc. I'm working on a paper for my Humanities class on how the philanthropy of Grand Rapids relates to the philanthropy during the Renaissance in Florence, Italy.

Small Changes That Make A Big Difference

I'm currently working on a paper comparing the philanthropy of Grand Rapids to the philanthropy during the Renaissance in Florence, Italy. I haven't found much information yet on Florence, but I've found numerous sites for information about Grand Rapids (one of which is a documentary I will finish watching soon and post about).

Surprise!

Even though her birthday isn't Monday, we decided to have a surprise birthday party for my friend Michelle (which made it even more of a surprise since she had no idea) on Friday night.

A Very Potter Workout

I've been trying to get in better shape lately, not necessarily dieting but staying active. The only problem is that I can't run because it bothers my knees and ankles too much (thank you high school sports) and usually I don't have the motivation to work out anyway. I was on Pinterest the other day and I stumbled onto this beauty:

It's warmer in Michigan than Florida????

It's only the second day of Spring, but it feels like the middle of summer. Not sure why exactly we have this heat wave, but it's quite nice compared to getting 2 feet of snow a few weeks ago. It just proves how bipolar Michigan's weather can be.

Aquinas College Unveiling

Last night the Aquinas Theater Department revealed their 2012-2013 Theater Season. Even though I'm not a theater major I'm still active in the theater community as much as I can.

Sunday Studying

So much homework this weekend! I had to write an annotated bibliography, prepare a master budget project, and read an article. But luckily, with nice weather, the start of Intramural Soccer, great friends, and the fact that it was St. Patrick's Day on Saturday, I wasn't going to let some dull homework ruin my weekend!

Summertime in Northern Michigan (almost)

It's currently 79 degrees outside and the weather is absolutely gorgeous. I wish the weather was like this year-round. It's just getting me even more excited for summer, and looking through these photos of Sleeping Bear Dunes on my computer isn't helping (photo credits to my friend Jon Peck)

Tattoo?

I want to get a tattoo. For me, it's not just about the artwork, it's about the meaning behind the artwork.

DIY Ringlet Scarf

I've been dying to post this scarf for a while, unfortunately due to the lack of time and other exciting things to post about, I've delayed it too long. But since it's getting close to Spring and all things Spring Cleaning, I figured this would be an excellent way to use up old t-shirts!

Blueberry French Toast Sandwich

I'm back at college! Only 8 more weeks left until I'm officially half-way through my college career. Scary right? I'm not that old but it sure feels like it, especially since I'm signing my first lease for my first house this week for next year. I'm beyond excited to move off campus with some great friends.

Oh the places we go!

Another birthday today for my amazing, fantastic, entertaining friend Rachel Lanczak! I met her in my Spanish class freshman year, but it turns out our schools played against each other in basketball a few years before. Small world right?

Thursday, March 8, 2012

Together we're totally awesome!

Today is March 8th, which means it's International Women's Day 2012. It also means that there are several birthdays today worth mentioning.

Almost Time for Africa!

In two months I will be traveling to Malawi! My professor e-mailed me some photos of when she went last year and I thought I'd share them. Don't worry, when I go to Malawi I will take plenty of pictures :)

Spring Break? More Like Christmas Break.....

Hooray for Internet access! It’s been three days I think since I was last online. Let me tell you it’s been the longest three days of my life. Now why haven’t I been online? Too busy? Traveled to somewhere warm and sunny? Not quite. Blame the Winter Blast of 2012.

What does Shutterstyle even mean?

Good evening! As you're reading this realize that I'm finally back home! It's been two months since I've been home, and how I've missed it so......

Leap Day at Ihop

Happy Leap Day! A day that only happens every four years. I wonder what would happen if you were actually born on Leap Day......Anyway, yesterday was National Ihop Pancake Day. If you went in at a certain time, you got free pancakes. Unfortunately me and my group went right after they stopped serving them, but that didn't stop us! I had a great time with Zander, Rachel, Patti, Marissa, Christian, Bernadette, Zach, and Anastasia (she's my birthday twin!).

Who are we? AQ!

I finally got a confirmation e-mail for the Orientation Team for 2012. My freshman orientation was definitely something to remember: meeting my roommate for the first time, Project Unite, my first weekend at college, etc.

What would you like to know about me?

I remember participating in those 30 Picture Challenges over Facebook and thought it would apply well to my blog. Usually I have some sort of idea of what to blog about, but lately it feels more like rambling. And I want to be able to write about any topic that's given to me. But I'm only going to use it in case I can't think of something to write about. This is one of those days.

Do Not Be Afraid

Happy Sunday! Not only is it the last performance of Arab/Israeli Cookbook, but also the last week of classes before Spring Break. Not only does this mean March is getting closer and I'll have a life again, but it also means that my trip to Malawi is getting closer and closer as we speak. We haven't technically started the actual class for this Study Abroad trip, but we didn't realize how much details were needed to be figured out before we traveled. And thank god we did!

Thirteen reasons for Lent

As promised, here is a picture of me with red hair. I'm still getting use to it, but I've received many compliments on the color so I think I'll keep it for a while. One thing that was a little hard to adjust to was that some colors of clothes look very strange with my new hair color. And also the sly comments about gingers not having souls, for which I'm starting to feel offended by these comments.

No longer sick of home

There was a saying I would always point out during the summer: I'm not homesick, I'm sick of home. I've been living in the same area my entire life. An area famous for cherries and most recently, the Sleeping Bear Dunes, it's a beautiful area to grow up. I've only moved once, and that was only down the street to my grandparents old house. The area I live in, Leelanau County, is absolutely gorgeous there's no question. Each season has it's unique perks.

I think I need a Pepsi...

Wake Up People! This is one of the biggest events at Aquinas College, and since it's the 125th birthday, this year was no exception. Simply put, it's an event sponsored by Pepsi with complimentary food from vendors, live music/entertainment and the exciting conclusion to “AQ Idol,” the annual campus talent competition.

New look, new post...who knew?

For those who know me you know I like change. I don't want things to look the same after a while. Whether it means recently dyeing my hair red, the debate of whether or not to get a tattoo and what of, updating my wardrobe, redesigning my blog, you name it!

Around the World in 80 Days

In 80 days I will leave for Malawi. No big deal or anything. Ah, who am I kidding? I'm freaking excited!!!! This was one of the reasons I decided to resurrect my blog in the first place. There's just so much to be happy about today:

Prague, why not?

It's almost time for Hell Week, aka Tech Week for those who know Theater. While I have another week, I'm taking the time to enjoy what little freedom I'll have for the next few weeks. First off, I dyed my hair red, which is the first time I've done so. It'll be interesting to see what life is like as a ginger. (Pics coming up soon I promise!)And after a long week of fundraising for Malawi, it turned out to be quite the success. We got many donations and talked with some people who were not only interested in the program, but also supported us all the way. One person thought it was Haiti we were fundraising for (sadly mistaken) and one person actually visited Malawi a few years back!

Jeremiah 29:11

Lately I've been evaluating my life and what the future has in store for me. I feel like I'm so behind compared to everyone else. It seems like I was missing on that one day when everyone decided what they wanted to do with their life.

Three months and counting

I've realized that I haven't been posting as much about Malawi as I should be. Shame on me! This officially begins the countdown until I go to Malawi, which is three months!!!!! Oh, and I found out we're possibly stopping in London, England, and Johannesburg, South Africa, on our way there. I've met the other girls back in January and we've been planning what exactly we want to do in Malawi, as well as learn of the pre-cautions we need to take (i.e. shots and anti-malaira pills, yippie).

The Cab & The Summer Set & Paradise Fears Oh My!

On Friday February 3rd me and my friends Patti and Rachel decided to road-trip to Ponitiac, Mi. While the drive there wasn't bad at all (thank heavens for no snow!), the area of Pontiac that the concert was in was, well, very shady. The town looked worn down, old, and not a good place to be at the time.

Keep Calm and Have Faith

Lately I've seen a bunch of images and renditions of "Keep Calm and Carry On". I will admit, I have one of those shirts. It's from a Team Starkid concert I went to in November with my friends Marissa and Rachel. In case you can't see it in the picture, it says: "Keep Calm and Tour Space"

Goodbye Accrual World.....

Enough said in the title. You can tell when I use such a bad pun like that I'm losing my mind. Actually, I lost my mind yesterday when I decided to name my textbooks (theory going around is that once you name something you grow attached to it and want to take care of it - in this case read it). My Accounting Book's name is Arnold, I'm not sure why I chose it, maybe because it sounds like a dorky name that would like Accounting. I have an accounting exam tomorrow and have lost all motivation to continue studying. I mean, based on this picture of all the material I have to cover can you blame me?

Another pin?

Lately I've been obsessed with Pinterest. I've tried a few of the pins I've seen, from how to tie scarves to healthy snacks. Today was no different.

A person's a person, no matter how small

This week at AQ we're celebrating St. Thomas Aquinas Week, where we celebrate his birthday all week with various events. That's quite the birthday week huh? I love the free cake in the lobby they have on Mondays. But, today is also another important day.

Friday, January 20, 2012

Don't let the weather deceive you

TGIF! It's been a long week and I'm so glad it's the weekend. Not only because there's no classes but also it's a nice break to just be inside and not do anything or brace the bitter cold.
It snowed for the first time last week (well, snowed and actually stayed I should say). It finally felt like winter in Michigan, especially at Aquinas College.

SOPA & PIPA Dilema

I have an opinion. It might not be as "out there" as others, but I still have one. I take advantage of sites like Facebook, Twitter, and of course my lovely blog, to express what I'm thinking. Beats a personal diary right? Although I know the difference and there are some things that I would never post online.

My new addiction to Pinterest

I found this recipe via Pinterest (my newest guilty pleasure) for the Ultimate Chocolate Cookie & Oreo Fudge Brownie Bar. Here's the link:
http://www.kevinandamanda.com/new-recipes/ultimate-chocolate-chip-cookie-n-oreo-fudge-brownie-bar.html
This got me thinking that, not only am I hungry, but it's definitely a gateway to my heart: a man who can cook/bake and loves to eat.

Ah, the old alma mater

Today I went back to my old high school, Lake Leelanau St. Mary. Luckily I wasn't the only alumni student there so it wasn't as awkward. It was definitely weird going back because I spent thirteen years at that school. If I learned anything from today is that I'm grateful for where I grew up, but I don't want to go back there AT ALL.
My graduation a few years ago

I'll miss you big brother

Sorry it's been a while since I last posted, lots of things going on in my life. Namely, the new year and my brother moving to Oakland, CA. Normally as the first post of the year people reflect on how they want to keep their resolutions and how different the year promises to be. Since Mike is moving, that will be a big change in my life. He recently got a job working with the Oakland Athletics. Before he lived in Grand Rapids and worked a bunch of part time jobs.
